Look at a France river cruises map and you will notice the rivers do not join up for cruise ships. Each cruising river is its own world, centred on a gateway city. That is why a French river cruise is usually a round trip or a one-way sailing within one region — and why picking the region comes first.
| River system | Where it runs | Gateway | Sailings usually reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seine | North-west from Paris to the English Channel at Le Havre and Honfleur | Paris | Vernon (Giverny), Les Andelys, Rouen, Caudebec-en-Caux, Honfleur |
| Saône | South through Burgundy to meet the Rhône at Lyon | Lyon or Chalon-sur-Saône | Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus, Mâcon, Trévoux |
| Rhône | South from Lyon to the Mediterranean through Provence | Lyon, Avignon or Arles | Vienne, Tournon, Viviers, Avignon, Arles |
| Garonne, Dordogne, Gironde | Two rivers meeting north of Bordeaux to form the Gironde estuary | Bordeaux | Libourne (Saint-Émilion), Blaye, Pauillac, Cadillac |
| Loire (lower) | West to the Atlantic at Saint-Nazaire | Nantes | Saint-Nazaire, Ancenis, Chalonnes-sur-Loire, Angers |
| Rhine | The border between Alsace and Germany | Basel, Amsterdam, Cologne… | Strasbourg (Kehl), Breisach for Colmar |
Exact calls vary by line and by water levels; your cruise documents always have the final list.
North, South, West, East
The north belongs to the Seine: Paris, the chalk cliffs and orchards of Normandy, Rouen’s cathedral. The south-east is the Saône–Rhône corridor, running from Burgundy through Lyon, France’s food capital, into Provence. The south-west is Bordeaux and its estuary, where wine estates line the banks. The west has the Loire, cruised by a paddle-wheeler from Nantes. The east is Alsace on the Rhine, plus a short stretch of the Moselle in Lorraine before it flows into Germany — see our Moselle site.

Getting Between Them
France’s high-speed trains make it easy to add a second region. Paris to Lyon, Paris to Bordeaux and Paris to Strasbourg are all quick rail journeys, so a Seine cruise can be followed by a few days in Provence or Alsace on land. Our cruise advisors can build that in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most river cruises in France start?
Paris for the Seine; Lyon (and sometimes Chalon-sur-Saône or Avignon/Arles) for the Rhône and Saône; Bordeaux for the Gironde region; Nantes for the Loire paddle-wheeler; and Basel, Amsterdam or German cities for Rhine cruises that call at Strasbourg.
Can I combine two French rivers?
Some lines sell combinations, for example a Seine cruise and a Rhône cruise joined by the high-speed train between Paris and Lyon. The rivers themselves are not linked for river ships.
